What Bimini Is Not Good For

Every other page about this island is written by somebody with a room, a boat or a seat to sell. We have nothing to sell you, so here is the list of things Bimini is genuinely not good at. Read it as a filter rather than a warning — and if you come out the other side still wanting to go, if you’re still coming, here’s how to do it right.

Some of what follows is fixable by planning and some of it is not, which is the distinction that actually matters. Most of the people who would be disappointed here can work that out in the next five minutes. The rest will have the trip of their life. The other pieces in our itineraries section assume you have already read this one.

It is much smaller than you think

Roughly nine to eleven square miles of land across the whole district, depending which source you take, and a population of 2,361 at the 2022 census. South Bimini has about 182 people on it. North Bimini’s three settlements — Alice Town, Bailey Town, Porgy Bay — run into each other with nothing but signage marking the boundaries, and in Alice Town you can walk from the ocean side to the harbour side in a couple of minutes.

That is charming for three days. For seven days with no boat its a small number of streets you have already walked. This is the single most common way a Bimini trip goes wrong: people budget a week for an island that has about three days of land-based content in it.

The cash problem

Bring cash. Rather alot more than you think.

We want to be precise about what we know here, because it is a question people get burned on. We have not been able to confirm a full-service bank branch or a reliably working ATM on either island. That is a statement about the limits of our research, not a proof of absence — but the fact that we could not confirm one, from any source, is itself informative, and Bimini is widely reported as cash-preferred. Card acceptance is inconsistent between businesses and can be inconsistent at the same business on different days.

The one piece of good news: the Bahamian dollar is pegged one-to-one with the US dollar and US cash is accepted everywhere, so there is nothing to exchange. Bring US notes, bring small ones, and do not assume you can top up when you arrive.

Food, shopping and the mail boat

There are 31 places to eat in our directory and perhaps six of them will matter to you. That is not a criticism of the six. Conch here is excellent and cheap and the stands are the real thing — people dive their own. But if you want a different cuisine every night for a week, this is the wrong island, and no amount of research changes that.

Shopping is 12 grocery and general stores and a handful of gift shops. The mail boat lands once a week, and fresh produce follows it: best in the day or two after it arrives, thinnest at the far end of the cycle. If you have booked a condo with a kitchen and you turn up at the wrong point in that week, the shelves will disappoint you. Plan the big shop around the boat or bring what you cannot do without.

Nightlife is a small number of bars with a lot of character. Big John’s does live music on weekend nights. The End of the World Bar is a sand-floor shack on the Alice Town waterfront and keeps genuinely irregular hours, so treat it as a bonus rather than a plan.

Renting a cart is a coin toss

You gonna want a golf cart, and the quality gap between operators is the widest of any category we track.

Of the 14 cart and transport operators we hold a Google rating for, 3 sit at 2.2 stars or below with at least five reviews behind them — and 2 of those carry 44 and 26 reviews, which is well past one bad day. We are not naming them, and that is deliberate: review data is a pattern, not a verdict on a business, small operators change hands, and we have not been there to check. What we will say is that the spread is real and you should read the reviews yourself before you wire a deposit.

Also: taxis do not run on meters. Fares are negotiated. Agree the number before you get in, in the same way you would anywhere that works this way.

Two months we would tell you to skip

September and October. Hurricane season runs June to November, and those two months carry the thinnest offshore fishing calendar of the year on our own season matrix. You get the weather risk without the fishery.

Winter has its own tax: the offshore water can be rough and windy, and a tight weather window is normal rather than unlucky. That is survivable here specifically because the deep water is close enough that a short gap is still a trip, which is not true of most destinations.

What it is actually good at

One thing, and it is world-class. There is a wall of deep water about a mile off the beach with a shallow bank behind it, which is the one thing it’s genuinely world-class at — two entirely different fisheries, minutes apart, within sight of the same dock. The flats hold bonefish every month of the year and the world record came off them. The edge holds wahoo in winter and billfish in spring.

Add diving, which is genuinely strong — great hammerhead season roughly January to April — and a wreck shallow enough to snorkel. If your ideal day involves being on or in the water from breakfast, none of the complaints above will touch you. If it does not, you will have walked the whole island by Tuesday.
