Bimini is the site of the standing world record for a species you are not allowed to take home. That is an unusual sentence and its the entire story here.
The species was uplisted to Critically Endangered in 2018, and the Bahamas closes it nationally for three months every winter. For the species detail and the depth ranges, the grouper page has them. For what you can legally put in the box, keep reading, because the answer is a different fish.
The record, and where it came from
38 lb 8 oz, Lewis Goodman, 14 February 1994, at Bimini. For a species FishBase records at a maximum around 48 inches and 55 lb, and which the Florida Museum describes as typically 10 to 20 lb, that is a genuinely large fish.
It is also the quieter of the island’s two world records — nobody puts it on a poster. We covered Bimini’s other world record and the figure the whole internet gets wrong about it separately.
The closed season, precisely
A general Bahamian grouper minimum weight and a per-vessel demersal bag limit also exist. We have seen figures for both, only from secondary aggregators, and we could not confirm either against an official government document — so we are not printing numbers we would be guessing at. Ask the boat, and reef captains who know the rules will tell you what the current limits are because they are the ones who get inspected.
What you can actually keep
| Species | Conservation status | Can you keep it? |
|---|---|---|
| Nassau grouper | IUCN Critically Endangered | No take in the Bahamas 1 Dec – 28 Feb; prohibited outright in US federal waters |
| Black grouper | IUCN Near Threatened | The practical legal target at Bimini, per local charter operators |
| Red grouper | Not assessed here | Also taken; confirm current limits with the boat |
| Yellowfin grouper | Not assessed here | Also taken; confirm current limits with the boat |
| Red hind | Not assessed here | Also taken; confirm current limits with the boat |
So the honest framing of a Bimini grouper trip is: you are bottom-fishing the reef and the wrecks for black grouper and its relatives, and if a Nassau comes up you photograph it and put it back. Grouper hold hard on structure — grouper hold on the Sapona and on the reef ledges, which is exactly why the technique is heavy tackle and an aggressive hookset to turn the fish before it gets back in its hole.
Why it collapsed, and the unsettled science
Nassau grouper form massive spawning aggregations, at the same sites, on the same lunar cycles, year after year. Tens of thousands of fish arriving reliably at a known place on a known date is the most efficient way a species can be fished out, and that is broadly what happened. The winter closure exists because it covers exactly that window.
The sex-change biology is genuinely unsettled and we would rather show you the argument than pick a side. The long-standing view, still cited by the Florida Museum, is that the species is a protogynous hermaphrodite — born female, some individuals turning male as they grow. More recent work cited on FishBase indicates it may instead be dioecious, keeping separate sexes for life, with documented primary males. Sources disagree. Anyone telling you flatly which it is has read one of them.
Its worth knowing because the two models imply different things about what removing the biggest fish does to a population, which is not an academic question for a species down 60 per cent. For where grouper sits against everything else on the calendar, the year in one table has it, and the species and seasons section collects the rest of the fish and the rules that go with them.
Questions people actually ask
Can I eat Nassau grouper in a Bimini restaurant?
Not during the closure — no sale is permitted between 1 December and 28 February. Outside it, grouper on a menu is far more likely to be black grouper or red hind anyway.
What happens if I catch one during the closed season?
Release it. There is no take, landing, processing or sale permitted during the closure, and that applies to recreational anglers.
Is the world record likely to be broken?
Not legally at Bimini in winter, and the species is Critically Endangered, so the honest answer is that nobody should be trying. The record has stood since 1994.
Which grouper will I actually catch?
Black grouper is what Bimini charter operators name as the practical legal target, along with red grouper, yellowfin grouper and red hind.
Where this comes from
No minimum weight and no bag-limit figure appears on this page: we have seen both reported by secondary aggregators and could not confirm either against an official Bahamian government document. The closed-season dates are published because they are statutory and corroborated, but the notice is reissued annually — check the current one.
